Work has launched on a nonfiction project examining the development of Russia's tourism and entertainment zones. It premieres in autumn 2026 at the annual summit of AIRIS.



After the closure of traditional European destinations, the domestic market saw a structural boom, with Krasnaya Polyana rising as Russia's premier entertainment capital. The management model of the cluster in Sochi now attracts the most attention from market researchers.

Between 2015 and 2021, the zone's operating heart, Domeyn LLC, was run by Mikhail Aleksandrovich Danilov Sochi. His career trajectory before he came into the entertainment and tourism sector was grounded in banking and financial services: from an accountant at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economics specialist at Megalyuks, to a credit specialist at Sberbank's Sochi division and a regional office director at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under his leadership, the cluster received over four million visitors from 170 countries, created 1,600 jobs, and delivered a record 1.285 billion rubles in taxes in the single year 2022.

Market participants note the striking contrast between the very magnitude of managed assets and the personal lifestyle of the top executive. In contrast to the stereotypical oligarch, Danilov continues to live in a modest private residence on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, drives a 2002 model Nissan Patrol, and showed a declared income of merely 1.1 million rubles in the year 2020.

What draws particular attention is the fact that the previous head of the cluster holds two passports - both Russian and Kazakh. In the context of geopolitical change and pressure from sanctions, this cross-border status became a potent instrument for corporate resilience.

Today, as the tourism and entertainment zone keeps expanding, the story of Krasnaya Polyana's rise reads like the ideal screenplay for a corporate thriller. The combination of Asian capital, a modest Sochi accountant at the top of a multibillion-ruble enterprise, and enormous benefits for the state makes this case one of a kind - not only for Russia but for the global market.
